Perhaps the best stories are the ones told under the influence of something. Something a little more than alcohol and herb though. Like life.

The every day Dick and Jane's concern when they leave the house is the story they are going to tell people. The people around us. They worry about whether what they say will make them 'cool' enough to fit in or whether or not they're being 'weird'? They worry too much about what they're going to say but...what about us? Aren't we the everyday Dick and Jane of modern society?

What will they say about us?

Often, I step into this world with the demeanour of a bad bitch who just stepped out of an AMG in the hood. Absoluteley minus fucks given. I lace up my chucks, grab my longboard, make sure the beanie is at a 37° angle to my hair (and isn't falling off) and walk out into the world with a “fuck it, let's get it then” attitude meant only for winners, titans and the entire Mayweather team.

What will they say about us?

Do we care? Are we supposed to? We all have that 'I don't care what people think' syndrome.

Yet you change your outfit five times in the morning before leaving your room. It has to be the right heels, the right fragrance, the right cut on the jeans, the right nails, the right nail colour, even for your toes! Gentlemen, should I mention the fade? The chucks? The chain game?

What will they say about us?

Do we care? Are we supposed to? How many likes do you have on your last Instagram post? Do you care? Are you supposed to?

Why do we pretend not to? Have we become that carefree as a generation? When I introduced myself to you for the first time, I spoke about acknowledgement. To have the ability to stand behind your own name and to say proudly, “Yes! I am [insert your name here].” To have people acknowledge that first and foremost.

But what will they say about us?

Do we care? Are we supposed to? Shouldn't we? We care so much about what they think already I mean, we might as well do the same with what they say right? How are we going to leave behind legacies when we leave this world otherwise? Have we not thought about that?

What will they say about us?

When they speak of you, is it with admiration or is it with contempt? Do the conversations involving your name inspire others to inspire? Do you care? Are you supposed to?

As a generation, do we care? Are we supposed to? Where are we headed? Do we care? Are we supposed to? We are a generation of non-conformists. We decide what we want, when we want it, how we want it. We decide what's cool or not. We think differently from prior generations. We're better equipped for any change because constantly through our upbringing 'things' have been created and updated and made better and those improvements have had upgrades and those upgrades, upgrades and in some cases, those things became a little more difficult to use, but we kept up. From Mxit to Whatsapp to the “last-seen Whatsapp” then to the “Blue-tick catch your bae cheating” Whatsapp version. We were made for this world.
